Over the past several years I have gotten the opportunity to record some covers with my older brother alek storvick. the first one that we did together was a cover of a hymn sang by our grandparents who unfortunately lost their lives before we were born. the hymn was “heaven came down” which we recorded as a gift for our mom a few years ago. For this cover I also made a version of alek singing with the original recording of my grandparents as well as restored the original recording for my mom, a project you can also find here at hygge sound.
The second cover that my brother and I got to work on together we recorded in february 2024 and thanks to finishing up school projects It took me a while to get around to mixing the project but it is finally done. we recorded a cover of death cab for cuties “i will follow you into the dark” which has always been a favorite song.
the cover was recorded at the core studios at the university of college denver using a mid-side technique to capture the guitar - for which I utilized a gefell um70 as the mid and a royer r-121 as the sides - as we had the chance to use a vintage neumann u87 for the vocals creating a warm and rich performance that really fits with the song.
Antoher really cool thing about this song was the reverb for the track is a convolution reverb utilizing the impulse response of me talking at the imperial hall of the lobkowicz palace in prague castle. i had the chance to visit this insanely gorgeous room with a stunning overlook of prague (pictured above) in the summer of 2024 on a study abroad trip throuh school. the hall is beautiful and has an insane reflection and tail, and getting the chance to use that impulse reponse for this project was just too perfect.
